💡 The two-word phrase that cools down any team

A while ago I helped a team give their conflict a shared language.

Two words: fuel and water.

Fuel escalates. The blame, the absolutes ("you never," "you always"), the interruption, the personal attack.

Water de-escalates. The listening, the curiosity, the common ground.

The magic isn't the words. It's that anyone can say, mid-meeting, "that was fuel for me," and it lands as a signal. The person who said the 'fuel thing' can hear it. The room can self-regulate.

Without that language, the same moment more likely becomes a fight about the fight. With it, conflict stays fierce on the task and safe on the people.

Here's what I personally believe: most teams don't have a conflict problem. They have a vocabulary problem. They feel the escalation but can't name it, so it just runs amok. It's a bit like a married couple that learns through counselling how to argue productively.

Try it. Establish 'fuel and water' as shared language. Then name the next escalation out loud, kindly. "That felt a bit like fuel for me." Doing so mean itself to offer water yourself.
